Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it initially served as a place of residence and work for the winch keepers and watchmen. They took care of the maintenance of the freight elevators in front of the warehouses and thus ensured that coffee, tobacco, spices, tea and other precious items from overseas, which arrived in fragrant bales in the free port, reached their interim storage in the Speicherstadt safely.

Today, the WASSERSCHLOSS is the most photographed building in Hamburg's historic port district. No wonder, because the location alone between two canals and terraces, framed by time-honoured brick buildings, makes the WASSERSCHLOSS unique.
