Great victories have been celebrated here, legends have been created, but people have also stood together in anxious moments. Only football can do that. But the stadium can do much more. What sustainability initiatives does the venue implement?
Energy
HSV Fußball AG only purchases electricity from renewable energy sources with guarantees of origin. Since the beginning of 2023, Shell has been supplying HSV Fußball AG with renewable electricity as part of a green electricity partnership.
Photovoltaic systems on the roof of the Alexander Otto Academy on the HSV campus ensure ecological electricity generation that covers around 20 per cent of annual requirements. The LED lighting throughout the Alexander Otto Academy is controlled by daylight.
To promote environmentally friendly mobility, a public ticket for HSV home matches entitles the holder to use local public transport within the Hamburg transport network.
Catering
HSV Fußball AG has introduced a reusable cup system for serving drinks in the public areas of the Volksparkstadion for the 2021/22 season and, together with its catering partner Aramark, has opted for an all-round sustainable solution. The new reusable cups are made of polypropylene (BPA-free), were manufactured in Germany and are recyclable. After use, the cups are washed in the immediate vicinity of the Volksparkstadion to minimise transport distances and thus CO2 emissions.
On home match days, vegan food is offered at four kiosks in the Volksparkstadion. The South 23 kiosk in the B tier offers vegan bratwurst and currywurst, vegan pretzels and a changing range of products such as fruit and salad cups, crisps, smoothies and wraps. The vegan stadium sausage from Rügenwalder Mühle can also be found here. Kiosk Ost 22a in the B-Rank is a "Brezelbutze", which sells vegan pretzel products with, for example, pumpkin seeds, chilli peppers and much more. Vegan bratwurst, currywurst and pretzel products are also available at kiosk S02 in the A tier of the south stand next to the guest block. The offer is completed by the "Vurstbude" near the family block, where Rügenwalder Mühle also provides a vegan stadium sausage.
