Strandbad Plötzensee

The centrally located beach by the bathing lake has been enjoyed by young and old for many generations. Directly adjacent to the listed main building is an old avenue that borders our extensive green spaces. Especially in the low season, we would like to make this unused space available to anyone looking for a quiet spot.

In the centre of the main building, a wide granite staircase leads up to the actual shore level. To the left and right of the stairs are vaulted buildings with sanitary facilities, lounges and catering facilities under a slate-covered conical roof. Next to it, retaining walls separate the bank and meadows, with terraces attached to the retaining walls. There are smaller tower-like pavilions on both the northern and southern shores of the beach, which house a kiosk on the lower floor and an outdoor seating area with a view of the lake on the upper floor. Above this is also a slate-covered conical roof.

The current site was created in the 1920s. Together with the creation of the Volkspark Rehberge, Wedding, which until then had hardly been developed, was to be remodelled as a leisure area for the workers living in Wedding. Planning for the construction of a public swimming pool began in 1922 and the construction of the pool and the remodelling of the site took several years. The opening took place on a building site as early as 1923. Soon after the opening, up to 10,000 visitors a day came in the summer months. At its peak, the number of visitors to the baths rose to between 30,000 and 40,000 a day. The pool was completed between 1926 and 1928 and originally included a 100-metre lane in the water and a ten-metre diving tower, neither of which survived the Second World War. After the war, a new 100-metre lane, a 50-metre lane and two 25-metre pools as well as a 5-metre diving tower were built by 1951, of which no traces remain today. By 1955, a large water slide and three-metre boards had been added.
